Annual Gifts: The Graduate School
Annual giving through the Alumni Fund is the backbone of alumni support for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Through the Alumni Fund, graduate alumni have become important partners in maintaining the unparalleled strength and potential of America's inaugural graduate school.
What do these gifts support?
Alumni gifts to the Graduate School are directed in support of the donor's department, where a portion is used for general fellowship support of students in that field and the remainder is administered by the department chair for a variety of purposes. These include:
- augmentation of fellowship awards to especially deserving incoming students
- small grants toward travel to conferences for students presenting papers
- emergency funds to help students
- programs to enhance student life
Why participate in annual giving to the Alumni Fund?
Alumni Fund gifts provide readily available support for graduate departments to channel into programs and fellowships that directly impact the quality of the graduate experience.
Support your department
Alumni participation signals strong support for your department and the importance of research performed there.
Sustain excellence
All fellowships in the Graduate School are awarded based on academic merit. Your gift helps ensure that promising students have the financial means to pursue the ambitious and demanding path of graduate study.
Enhance your department's profile
A portion of Alumni Fund gifts go toward travel fellowships, which play a role in enhancing departmental recognition both within Yale and throughout the broad scholarly community.

Who was Nathan Hale?
A member of Yale's graduating Class of 1773, Nathan Hale served as a Revolutionary soldier in Cambridge, New York, and New London and eventually volunteered to be a spy under General Washington's direction.
Disguised as a schoolmaster, he found his way into the British camps in Brooklyn and New York. He was recognized while attempting to return and arrested. His papers were found in his shoes — among them his Yale diploma. Before being executed on September 22, 1776, his last words were: "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
